A new study conducted by Beckman Institute reveals that a person who happens to offer a handshake during interactions manages to create a better impression than a person who does not offer to shake hands.
We already know the power of a handshake and how it manages to create that positive first impression. The researcher at Beckman Institute, Florin Dolcos and his associate Sanda Dolcos of the psychology department have reported that a handshake does not only have a good impression during an interaction but also it helps to minimize the negative impact that one might create due to avoidance behavior.
Be it to seal a deal or that day to day greeting the impact of a handshake has always done the trick. To prove their point the researchers carried out a test on 18 people comprising of both male and female where in the objective was to observe the result due to approach and avoidance behavior which were to be evaluated using the fMRI (Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging), behavioral responses and skin conductance tests. The volunteers were shown animated videos showing non- verbal interactions between a guest and the host. The tests have justified the positive impact of handshake and showed that how it helps in receiving positive response from the person at the other end. The animated videos have been described as a welcome change from previous approach which only used stating images.
This new study has helped in reinstating the results of the previous studies and also it has unearthed some new findings on approach and avoidance interactions. So the next time you meet someone, you know what you have to do to get into their good books.
