We Humans have always had the tendency to forget unwanted memories, ever wondered what actually goes behind it? Well, recent researches carried out by the scientists at Medical Research Council Cognition and Brain Sciences at Cambridge, UK has revealed how one can not only suppress and control one’s memories but also forget them.
As per the research conducted by Roland Benoit, this can be done either by the direct suppression method or by the thought substitution method, now both these methods are long term methods and ensure that the targeted memories are completely wiped out from the system by attacking the retention system that is actually responsible for retaining memories. Both these methods were observed by a technique called Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging.
To prove their research the scientists carried out a test on 36 patients wherein they were trained to forget a particular set of words by replacing them with another set of words, here by the regular exercise the first set of words were able to be replaced by the new set of words. Thus, helping the scientists to prove their theory that a particular memory could be substituted with another memory thereby replacing that old memory completely.
Science has always tried to probe the impossible and well seems like this is another milestone that has been achieved by our brainy lot. We can now not only control our motor senses but also control the regions where subconscious dwells. This research might prove to be more than a boon for victims of trauma and it might help them shut the doors leading to their most horrific times forever thereby helping them to recuperate from personal tragedies. This research has paved the way for further hope helping people suffering from post traumatic stress.
